How does Alfred offer lower prices than the big brands?

Alfred's business model is just different. We make a fixed margin per household (our annual membership) rather than profiteering on the actual services our members use. Alfred also offers four services but we only have one set of overheads; that makes a big difference.

In terms of our rates, we have collective purchasing power — so you're basically getting bulk prices and the more members we have, the lower our prices will be.

How can Alfred be a single provider of energy, mobile, broadband and insurance?

When we launch our services, Alfred will be an Ofgem, Ofcom and FCA-regulated provider. In the case of energy, mobile and broadband we'll deliver your service end to end. For insurance, Alfred will act as a broker and your claims will be managed by one of the top-tier insurance brands on our panel.

Can Alfred really be the lowest cost energy provider?

For many households, yes — but honestly, not all. Here’s how it works. Alfred sells energy at the price it costs to supply, with no margin added. Instead, membership costs £195 a year. So the more energy your household uses, the more you save compared with a supplier who adds a margin to every unit. Use less, and the membership might cost more than it saves you. Before you join, we’ll show you what we expect you’d pay with us, based on your actual usage — so you can see whether it stacks up before you join.

I'm not able to switch some of my household services until my contract ends. Can I join Alfred if I'm not ready to switch all four?

Absolutely. You can start with one service and Alfred can remind you as your contract ends on the others, so you can bring them across. The only thing to bear in mind is that the membership fee is always £195 a year so your savings become better the more services you move over to us.

Who handles switching - me or Alfred?

Alfred handles switching. When you're ready, we manage the process of moving your services across from your existing providers. You don't need to make calls, serve notice, or chase anyone. We handle the admin — that's why we're here.

If I need help, who do I contact?

Accepted Answer

As your provider, if you have an issue with one of your services the buck stops with us. You can contact Alfred via the app and a member of our team is there to help you. The only exception is if you need to make a claim on your insurance - that will be dealt with by the insurer in line with your policy. They are the experts in supporting our members in this situation so you will be in safe hands.

If I need help with my broadband or the smart meter in my home, does Alfred have engineers on the ground?

Alfred will try to solve your problem remotely first because it's quicker and easier for everyone. But if you need someone to come to your home, Alfred will send an engineer.

Question 8

How does billing work — is it all in one payment or separate bills?

Accepted Answer

You pay the annual Alfred membership of £195, plus the cost of whichever services you take with us. While they use the same direct debit, these are billed individually, so you can see exactly what you're paying for each service. On the Alfred app, you get one view of your bills, all in one place.

How do I know how much I'm really saving?

The honest answer is it depends on what you're currently paying. Before you join us, we’ll show you what we expect you’d pay with us, based on your actual usage — so you can see whether it stacks up before you join. And if you’re not happy with your savings we'll refund your membership.

Some of my bills are in my partner's name. Is that a problem?

Not at all. Obviously you’ll need their approval to switch those services to your Alfred membership. You can start with the services that are in your name and add others over time, at whatever pace works for you both.

How does Alfred's pricing compare to my current provider?

Accepted Answer

For most members, wholesale pricing is meaningfully cheaper than traditional retail tariffs, particularly for households that don't routinely switch and are probably paying loyalty penalties compared to new customers on a discount.

Can I leave any time?

Accepted Answer

Yes. There are no lock-ins or exit fees if you're on the Wholesale Variable energy tariffs, or for mobile or broadband. The only case where you'll be tied in is when you've chosen to go for the Wholesale Fixed energy tariff, but even in that case, if you pay the £50 exit fee, we'll refund any unused membership. For example, if you leave after 8 months, we'll pay you back £65 (4/12 x £195). Alfred won’t charge any fees for cancellation of your insurance but cancellation periods and fees by insurance partners will be outlined in your chosen policy.

If I do leave, will you refund my membership?

Yes. Alfred will refund any unused membership. For example, if you leave after 8 months, we'll pay you back £65 (4/12 x £195). One caveat is that if you take out a 12-month insurance policy, your membership fee is no longer refundable. We'll service your policy until the end of the term, but you won't be able to add any other Alfred services during this period, unless you have an active Alfred membership. If you take out a policy and later cancel the policy, then your unused membership fee is refundable.

How much effort is it to join Alfred?

A household can move their services to us really quickly, in one go if they’re ready to. The great advantage of Alfred, is that once you've switched everything once, you’re done. You don’t need to redo it every year to avoid the loyalty penalty. Alfred's model means that you’re always on our best available wholesale rate - there’s no loyalty penalty and no need to switch each year to stay competitive.

Is Alfred a regulated provider or a broker?

Alfred is a regulated provider of energy, mobile and broadband. This means we buy wholesale, we own pricing, we own customer support and we're responsible for all aspects of the customer relationship, just like Octopus for energy, Tesco for mobile, or Sky for broadband. However, for insurance we're both. We're regulated by the FCA as an Authorised Representative, yet we're also broking the policies that are written, and underwritten, by the big brand insurers. The difference with Alfred compared to other insurance brokers, is we don't add a profit margin to the premiums we sell beyond our annual membership. It’s also worth noting that insurance cancellation periods may vary, based on your insurance company, but you can get more information on this when you take out a policy.

How do I know you’ll keep the Alfred guarantee?

Honestly, if a member isn’t happy with Alfred and wants to leave, we want to make it as easy as possible for them and we’ll offer a refund on their membership. We want members to love the whole experience, so much so that the savings are the cherry on top.

What if I have more than one home?

That's no problem. In fact your life is about to get a whole lot easier. For every extra home there's an additional £125 a year membership but you can manage them all together in the Alfred app.
