On 11 September 2012, the FSA imposed on BlackRock Investment Management (UK) Limited (BIM) a financial penalty of £9,533,100 (discounted from £13,618,800 for early settlement) in respect of breaches of Principle 3 and Principle 10 of the FSA's Principles for Businesses and breaches of certain client money rules in force during that time. In the period between 1 October 2006 and 31 March 2010 BIM failed to protect client money adequately by not obtaining trust letters to identify the status of certain money market deposits, and failed to take reasonable care to organise and control its affairs responsibly in relation to the identification and protection of client money. The average daily balance affected by this failure was over £1.36 billion.
