Track record

Action taken against them

1 fine in 2008, £11,900 in total. This is part of the official register record and is worth reviewing before going ahead.

  • Fined £11,900 on 7 July 2008
On 7th July 2008 the FSA imposed a financial penalty of £11,900, (reduced from £17,000 for early settlement) on Mortgage Master for failing to comply with Principle 3 of the Principles for Businesses and FSA Rules, and rules in Chapter 4 of the section of the FSA's Handbook entitled Mortgages and Home Finance: Conduct of Business Sourcebook (MCOB) and chapter 3 of the section of the FSA's Handbook entitled Senior Management Arrangements, Systems and Controls (SYSC). These breaches relate to Mortgage Master's failure to adequately supervise one of its two mortgage advisers resulting in applications containing false and misleading information being submitted to prospective lenders. More specifically Mortgage Master's failings were as follows. 1. Mortgage Master did not have appropriate management systems and controls to: a. ensure the effective supervision and ongoing monitoring of the Adviser, including ensuring that he obtained from customers and recorded all the information likely to be relevant to ensure the suitability of his advice; b. conduct appropriate compliance monitoring in respect of the firm's sales processes, or use management information to focus its compliance monitoring appropriately; and c. take reasonable care to counter the risk that the firm might be used to further financial crime, including by verifying customers' income details where, taking a common sense view, the firm ought to have realised that income information in application forms was or could have been inaccurate. The action also requires Mortgage Master to undertake a review of all of the mortgage files of the former adviser and inform all lenders and clients where false information has been included in mortgage applications.
